moving to tumblr

Hello all five of my readers! As you've probably noticed, I have not updated my blog in quite some time. This is due to my incredibly busy schedule as an RA, researcher, full time student, and girlfriend!
I'm making a move to tumblr and will no longer be updating this blog. No guarantees that I'll keep up with it there either but I want to try it out.
So, you can find me on tumblr at http://hixsongirl.tumblr.com/

Thanks for following me and I hope you follow me to tumblr!

Happy 4th of July!!!!

The 4th of July is my FAVORITE holiday!!! (After Thanksgiving) That has everything to do with the fact that I'm a pyro :)
Plus, I love cookouts, good music (which will be provided by my brother's band, The Keith Lee Trio) and July :)

Here's some non lethal but still fun fireworks for you to enjoy!

Tilly and the Wall Concert!!!!!!!!!!

So, if you haven't heard of Tilly and the Wall, that's ok. They're an indie pop band from Omaha and they are amazing! I discovered them on npr a year or so ago and instantly fell in love.
Well, they came to a city close by and I finally got to see them!!! Here's a poor quality video of the better parts of the night :)
Be impressed with my mad editing skills ;)

Michael Jackson is dead...what? you didn't know?

It's no surprise really that the media is hyping this up so much. And yet people seem surprised and annoyed by how much attention MJ is getting for dying. Actually, I'd say people are more annoyed with the tone the multitude of stories are taking. Almost everything is mournful with an oh-MJ-you'll-be-missed-so-much kind of tone. These annoyed people like to think they are clever by calling the media out on the bluff, pointing to the fact that in recent years, the same journalists were attacking him for being a weird, semi white, semi black, semi male, semi female, baby hanging, delicate nosed, pedophile.

While this is very true, I'd like to point out that the reason the media is taking this tone is because Michael Jackson was once loved by nearly everybody. He was revolutionary in his career. He was the king of pop! The way he's been for the past decade or so (really, the entire time I've been conscious of him...wasn't around when he was making good music) was ruining the way people wanted him to be. They want the Jackson 5 and Thriller.

So, it makes total sense that now he's finally out of the way, we can go on remembering him the way we want him to be instead of who he really was.

Jon and Kate...

Ok, I don't even know where to start...
Here, watch this first:

The article that I found this in talked about how she would've been surprised if the Gosselins had ended the show to save their marriage. I agree and I also think it's semi ridiculous that they're trying to pass the living situation off as "it's the kids' house" crap. It's so transparent! Any Jon and Kate Plus 8 fan knows that their house has had special studio lighting installed for the show. They're switching off time at the house because following the kids to Jon's house would cost the show more money!

It's just so obvious to me that this entire situation is all about money. That's why they're continuing the show. Plain and simple. There is really no other reasonable reason for it. And like the article said, "I get that this is reality, but it's just not a fun show about the chaos of eight children anymore. It's uncomfortable to watch." And probably seriously unhealthy for the kids in the long term.

Who can really blame them though? She writes and he does what again? Not really something that can support a household of 10, let alone college educations, hospital bills, special interests the kids might have, etc. The show is probably their biggest source of income.

And also, I'd like to point out that as bitchy as Kate can get with Jon, it's completely justified. From what they show on tv at least, it appears as though Jon just ambles through life allowing Kate to boss him around because it's easier than trying to think and do for himself. There was really no partnership that I saw in that relationship to begin with. He should have taken more of a stance and active role in his family from the beginning.

8 kids are stressful. duh. 8 kids plus a passive and lazy husband, that's super stressful. But 8 kids plus a passive and lazy husband AND a house full of cameras watching your every move AND the stresses of everyday life = insanity. And yet we laugh and blame Kate for being such a bitch. I'm not saying her behavior is appropriate, I'm just saying we need to evaluate the situation more closely before throwing around accusing names.

HOWEVER, if you are into making fun of Kate or the whole show in general, Dr.CoolSex on youtube puts out some pretty hilarious parodies.

Here's one for you to sample :)

I gotta joke for ya!

I was watching Natalie on communitychannel (on youtube) and she always shows some comments left from the last video that she enjoyed. One was this joke and I liked it so much, I decided to share it with you :)

A student comes to a young professor's office hours. She glances down the hall, closes his door, and kneels pleadingly. "I would do anything to pass this exam." She leans closer to him, flips back her hair, gazes meaningfully into his eyes.
"I mean," she whispers, "I would do anything."
He returns her gaze, "Anything?"
"Anything."
His voice turns to a whisper, "Would you... study?"

Summer Music Choices

Ok, so I made a few posts today instead of doing one big one with unrelated stuff.
This is is about my summer music. I've discovered some bands and am just crazy in love with them right now!

First up is Mika. His music is amazing and the man himself is sexy as hell! Well, in a skinny boy, musician, quirky kinda way. Which is sexy to me. He was born in Lebanon and you can really see the European influence in his music videos.
I had a really hard time figuring out what song to post here. Grace Kelly is my favorite but Big Girl is really good too and Lollipop... Relax, Take it Easy...oh and Love Today...see my dilemma?! So I think I'll just post a few and leave it up to you all to check out the others.

oh what the hell, here's Grace Kelly too!

The next band I've fallen for is MGMT. It's actually been a long courtship, but I've heard enough of their stuff now to be sure I'm ready to take this relationship to the next level, sort to speak :)
So, if you listen to popular/alt rock radio, you're probably familiar with the song, Kids, by them. That song was really good before they over played it. But here's some of their other stuff that is just as good if not better. Enjoy!

This is the interactive version of the music video. For some reason I can't embed the actual one, so you'll just have to go to youtube yourself to watch the real one.

Yeah, for some reason the embed option is disabled on all of their music videos. But if you like them, you can go to youtube and see all of them. I'll also recommend the songs Time to Pretend, and Youth.

Okay, and the last band I've added to my summer playlist is Backseat Goodbye. Like MGMT, I've known about them for a while but haven't had the chance to really get to know them until now. My absolute favorite of theirs is Technicolor Eyes! :) They also do great covers of My Girl (by the Temptations) and Anyone Else but You (by the Moldy Peaches).

Here's my favorite :)

I hope you all enjoy my music!

Baby Wolf Learns to Howl!

This is just adorable :)

Baby Discipline by Street Carnage

If you haven't seen this guy's videos, you MUST. He is the funniest stay at home dad ever! Here's one video and here's a link to his other stuff :)
*fyi, not all of his stuff is as entertaining as the videos with his kids.

Another (adorable) Frustrated kid I can relate to

I don't really know what it says about me that every time I see a video like this, my first response is, Oh!!! I know exactly how he feels!

He's so cute and his dilemma is so funny I had to post it:

Ladies and gentlemen! The FUTURE has arrived!

I MUST have one of these at some point in my life. This is the absolute coolest thing I have EVER seen!
I can't help but wonder though, it is going to as intensely frustrating as voice command wireless car phones or gps?

People who are amazed that songs have the same chords

So, a few years back a friend showed me this video:

Hilarious right? I was so amazed that all those songs had the same chords and sounded alike. You don't really catch that in real life all that often. (unless you are around a music person) I once dated a clarinet player and my brother is a guitarist...if you tried to defend rap and/or pop with these two, they'd go apeshit. It was pretty ridiculous...oh god...and the conversations about what it means to "sell out"...Jesus! Be happy you weren't there.

Anyways, being around those two and playing piano for a few years taught me that lots of songs have the same chords. Lots of songs sound alike. Just like there are only like, what? 12 stories. We just invent variations...and that's okay!

I understand people's desire for new and unique music but I say you have to take the good with the "bad". Musicians just experiment to figure out what they love, what we love, and what we'll buy. We typically like songs to sound familiar with a little bit of difference. That's what we buy, so that's what they make.

This is the video that got me started on this rant:

Yep, so I think that's it on that subject.

Few updates on me: I've moved back to Manhattan (yes, that'd be the one in the middle of the country...sad...not really) But it is kinda sad because my internship is housing me in a frat house that is pretty dirty with a very confusing industrial type kitchen. On the bright side, I chose the biggest room (tile, no carpet and no closet) and have it all to myself. I'm going to go finish unpacking and organizing everything now!

Oh and on a side no

Finals and CommunityChannel!

It's been a while since I've made a post. Sorry about that (to all of my avid readers ;)~)
Finals are over and I've been packing up my room and getting ready for my summer internship. It's going to be good :)

So, anyways...I've found this person on youtube and I think she is hilarious! She's Australian, Asian, awkward...all the makings for a great vlog. You can find her channel here. She always says "hi" really high-pitched with a little wave and just comments on various things in society. It's great :) And here is one of my favorite videos of hers:

Yay Mom!

Inspired by my cousin's awesome blog, Our Suburban Cottage (if you like interior design, you'll LOVE her blog), I decided to write a quick post about my mom :)
I'm extremely lucky to have the mom I do. She invests so much of herself in her kids' lives and empathizes with us more than any other mom I know. She and my aunt (my cousin's mom) really are the BEST mother's we could ask for!!

Happy Mother's Day Mom, AnNicole, Aunt Vicky, Grandma, Nana, and all the other moms in my family! I love you all!

Beatboxin and fluteboxin in the UK

While I'm not a huge fan of beat-boxing (spelling? I don't even know) I do love it when genres cross. These two guys are very entertaining...makes me wonder what I could've been if I hadn't quite playing the flute in 8th grade...oh well :)

Men. Are they really this bad?

So, you know those articles they post on the Yahoo! home page? Every couple of days there's a relationship one. "Why Men Cheat" is a common one, I've noticed. Today's relationship article was about dating (shocking). That's not what this post is about. At the end of those articles are always links to similar articles.

Now, when I'm bored at work (like I am now) "Why Guys Dump Girls They Dig" easily captures my attention and before I know it, I'm 2 pages deep into theories about why my past relationships ended.

Ok, I know that this is a Cosmo article. Not exactly the most reliable source. But still, I can't shake the nightmare it would mean if this article reported truth. I mean, many of these "theories" could explain why my most recent break up went down the way it did, but it's not really a consolation.

Can anyone deny these claims? I'd really hate to believe that guys are this scumbag-pig-jerk-asshole-like.

Cutest thing!!!! Baby squirrel gets help climbing a wall

This is just the cutest thing ever!!!

Night

In 9th or 10th grade, I read the book Night by Elie Wiesel. If you haven't read it, I recommend it. It's about Wiesel's experience surviving the concentration camps. His story really touched me and I wrote this poem:

I used to think the night was short
back when sleep
overcame me the
moment
my head hit the cottoncloudlike pillow
back when dreams were
accompanied by sunshine sonatas
with visions of chocolate palaces and marshmallow beds
The hours flowed by unnoticed like a soft
stream in the woods until
all of a sudden
it would be
morning

but

now i know better
now i know how long the
night really is
now i know that each
hour is composed of sixty miserable minutes
which are formed by sixty
excruciating seconds
and in each second an eternity elapses
my nights are spent
sleepless
in this
hell
where mercy graces no one
where death lingers like fog in the city
where there is
no God
in every eternalsecond
i’m reminded that my days are numbered
that at any moment they
could choose me
as the next number to
die
but what i fear the most
is not death or
laborious days with no food
no what makes me shiver with trepidation in every bit of my being
is
surviving

Keith Lee Trio

This is one of my all time favorite bands! (and not just 'cause my brother is the lead singer!) This was a really good show! Here's Keith Lee Trio playing Voodoo Child and an original called, Don't Play with My Heart. You can see more of them and buy their music at www.myspace.com/keithleetrio and become a fan of them on facebook :)

Scarf Project!

I thought I'd show you guys what I'm working on currently :) I found this scarf pattern on Raverly. And I got the yarn as a gift from my on of my many knitting aunts. I really love this yarn...it reminds me of playdough icecream :) I've only had playdough icecream one place in my life and it's gone now. I'd love to know if anyone else has had/remembers it!

This is a close up of the pattern. It's really neat :)

I got a little happy with the camera.

Yay new sunglasses!

post secret

This was taken from postsecret.com. They update every sunday and reading the new secrets is one of my favorite things to do at the end of the week. It's just so powerful because there are some that you really feel for. There are so many secrets that touch my heart...it makes me want to give the person a hug and tell them everything is going to be okay.
I chose to post this one, not because I think my life is boring (cuz I don't) but because I love David Sedaris and I feel for the person who wrote this. I want to tell them that they can tell their story better than David Sedaris could, that they have that ability...they just need to believe in themselves.
I dunno...I guess it's a good thing I'm going to be an RA. I like helping people a lot.

Anyways, if you don't already, I highly recommend checking the site and/or buying the post secret books. It's quite the experience.

Disney Templates

This is just crazy. I feel ripped off...

BLOOD-AA!!

This is a little kid trying desperately to explain to his father that his baby brother has blood on his cheek:

Funny right?! He's so adorable!! and soooo serious! Now, while I laugh, I have to admit, I can totally relate to this kid. I'm short and for some reason, this makes it funny when I try to make a point (especially when I'm mistaken, like the young gentleman in the video). I love my boyfriend, but he and my siblings are the most guilty when it comes to laughing at "serious kelsey." Haha, and you can see at the end of the video, he almost starts to laugh because his dad is laughing and that makes him mad so he yells. Typical response. I hate it when people make me undermine my own point by making me laugh at myself... :)

First Poem Post!

This one is being published :)

Wache

It’s only when we talk that I realize
how much I’ve hidden from myself

How much I’ve stored away in the
do-NOT-remember-or-else file in the
CAUTION-may-cause-burns cabinet in the
avoid-at-ALL-costs room in the
cobwebcorners of my mind

and yet
despite all the warnings
all the screams from the audience
(NO! don’t go in there!!)

I venture to that corner
enter that room
unlock the cabinet
and scour the file
all at the sound of your voice
and I’m plunged into
blissful nostalgia
for that tentwenty minutes (or however long you have)
and then

“okay, well I should go”
“oh, yeah, me too”
“have a good week”
“yeah, you too”
“k, bye”
“bye”

CRASH!
downpour
instantaneous JOLT back to reality
you are there (yes NEW YORK, I freaking get it)
I am here
we are not together
that’s that
it must be

quick!
QUICK!
pass the hot potato
jump the lava
put it all back!
someone’s coming
no one’s coming
they’re here
I’m alone

shit

slam the cabinet
lock the door
throw away the key (I should never have come back)
flee the scene
and forget
Forget!
FORGET!
go numb
(it takes a few days to cool the burns of those hot memories)

and then it happens
I stop thinking about you
I put on that sunny disposition until even I’m fooled
and here is my life
I am happy

but there is always that ache in my chest
(and by now I can’t remember what it could be from)
(what’s got into me?! I’m a sap!)
as if instead of breaking, shattering my heart
that blow simply set off
a little explosion of emotion that expanded my heart
so now
I see the dying, suffering people of history
the grieving son of present
the execution of an innocent and FICTITIOUS man
and it’s all I can do to
keep composure
to not stop this body
sit it down
and cry
grieve
for loses I’ve never felt
for people I’ve never met
for souls who never lived

my sympathetic and empathetic abilities
have reached superhuman proportions
and I don’t know
what to do
with them

Milk

Okay, so apparently I'm just on a note writing spree tonight (bored at work lol)

So, I saw Milk and REALLY really liked it. Sometimes, you just come across those movies, or novels, or quotes that just make a huge impact on you. Sometimes it's hard to explain why, but whatever. Supersize Me had this affect on me and did Milk.

The more and more I think about what Harvey Milk fought and died for, the more black and white this issue becomes for me. I mean, it just seems SO obvious that denying gay and lesbians their rights as American citizens and as human beings is as offensive, oppressive, and just out and out wrong as it was to deny African Americans or women theirs. I mean, come on people, can we please show a little progress?! I mean it seems like we have an obsession with oppression...and we should get some help for that.

For those of you not convinced, let me share some information with you. There have been many studies conducted to answer the question why some men and women are homosexual while others are heterosexual. While the genetic research isn't very developed, the discoveries made in brain structure should be enough of an explanation. It has been proven that gay men's brains function more like straight women and gay women's brains function more like straight men. It's not a choice. Well, I mean in a way it is. I suppose gay men and women choose to be themselves and not live a lie...but come on, it's not a choice.

I think people are just afraid of the unknown and of what they don't understand. That's human instinct I think. But we need to mature past that. We need to accept instead of discriminate. It's just so preposterous to me that SO many people are ok with openly discriminating! and it seems that most do it because it's in the Bible. and that's a whole other issue...

...which I will address :) okay, so I admit, i have not read more than 5 pages of the bible. However, I do know that the bible also says do not kill. And yet, we find justification for killing all the time. War is the obvious one. but what about capitol punishment? well they deserve it right? come on guys, is that really what Jesus would do?! My point is, just because it is in the Bible does not mean it is 100% true in every single situation!

but, I'm getting off subject. this note is getting a bit lengthy, so I will wrap it up. Let's get over our fears, stop hiding behind religion, and start practicing tolerance.

as always, I love to hear your comments (for or against my stance)

Nobody likes intros

...so I'll make this short! I'm Kelsey. I love writing and thought this would be a good outlet for that side of me. Nobody may every come across this...and I'm okay with that. Of course, the whole point of making it though is in the hopes that someone will eventually read it. I love feedback and controversial issues. (I know, a bit of a non sequitur, but whatever)
I'm in college and majoring in Biology and English (on the Creative Writing Track) and I'm also going to be an RA soon.
I think that's pretty much all ya need to know about me at the moment.
I'll get some good stuff up soon :)
